Discover Restaurant Xo

Walking into Restaurant Xo for the first time, I remember noticing how quickly the room filled with the sound of conversation and clinking plates. It sits at 3434 Waialae Ave, Honolulu, HI 96816, United States, right along a stretch locals pass every day, yet many don’t realize how much care goes into what comes out of this kitchen. I stopped in after a morning of errands, expecting a quick bite, and ended up staying longer than planned because the food invited that kind of pause.

The menu leans into comfort without feeling dated. Dishes are familiar but thoughtfully put together, and that balance is harder to achieve than it looks. One of the servers explained that many recipes are tested repeatedly before landing on the final menu, which tracks with what the James Beard Foundation often highlights about consistency being a hallmark of strong neighborhood restaurants. You taste that effort in the sauces, which are simmered in small batches rather than rushed, a process that mirrors traditional diner methods refined for today’s expectations.

I’ve eaten at a lot of local diners over the years, and what stands out here is attention to detail. During one visit, I watched the kitchen staff check temperatures and plating before dishes went out, a habit encouraged by food safety standards from the Hawaii Department of Health. According to their data, restaurants that follow strict prep and holding practices significantly reduce food waste and improve quality, and that discipline shows on the plate. Portions feel generous but not careless, and ingredients taste fresh rather than overworked.

There’s a quiet confidence in how Restaurant Xo handles its reviews, too. Instead of chasing trends, the team seems to listen carefully to feedback. A regular at the next table told me she mentioned a seasoning issue once, and a week later it had been adjusted. That kind of responsiveness builds trust, which is why so many online reviews mention reliability as much as flavor. In my experience, places that treat feedback as useful data, not criticism, tend to last longer in competitive locations like Waialae Avenue.

The dining room itself feels relaxed, more like a community hub than a polished showroom. Families stop in after school events, and solo diners sit comfortably with a book or phone. That atmosphere doesn’t happen by accident. Research from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration has shown that casual layouts and clear service flow improve guest satisfaction, and you can sense those principles at work here without them being obvious.

One afternoon, I chatted briefly with a cook during a slower hour. He described how prep starts early, with vegetables washed and cut fresh each day and proteins portioned to avoid over-ordering. That method reduces waste and keeps flavors clean, aligning with USDA recommendations on safe food handling and freshness. Hearing that made the meal feel even more grounded in real practice, not just good intentions.

People often ask if this spot is worth returning to, and my answer is usually the same: yes, because it feels honest. There are flashier locations in Honolulu, but not all of them offer the same steady experience. Whether you’re scanning the menu for a familiar favorite or checking reviews before your first visit, Restaurant Xo delivers food that reflects care, process, and respect for the people it serves. The best way I can describe it is a place you don’t rush through, and in today’s dining scene, that’s saying something.

  • Food was delicious and unique. Drinks were good too. Server was attentive and knowledgeable. Some of the best fried chicken I've had which I did not expect. My girlfriend loved the beet lotus.

  • So yummy, each course a flavor bomb! Good price! Went here for dinner with my husband, ordered the 7 course set menu and added the +$10 lamb add-on. Every course was yummy and full of flavor. The main ingredients (chicken, lamb, pork belly, etc) of each dish were high-quality and well prepared. But what makes this dinner really special are the unique sauces that flavor each plate. My favorites: the “Miso Sesame Vin” sauce on the sashimi, and the “Shellfish Beurre Monte” sauce on the shrimp. My husband, not at all a veggie lover, even loved the Beet Lotus course (as did I). For sugar-lovers, recommend adding the ice cream pie. This was like a super high end-carvel ice cream cake with crunchy cookie crumbles and rich rum-chocolate sauce. The coffee ice cream was just the right amount of bitter. (Sous chef recommended combining bites of the bunny dessert with this ice cream, great advice!) The courses are very reasonable in size, especially for the price and quality. We had leftovers. The restaurant was not crowded for a Saturday night (guessing because we went late the day before Easter), so The Sous Chef had time to come out and tell us about how the menu was cultivated. His passion for food was obvious. The line cooks here are also the servers, so whoever brought the food to the table was able to answer any questions we might have about ingredients, etc. We will certainly come here again if we can.

  • I’m blown away by XO. The quality of this price fixe menu was unbelievable, especially for the price. Every dish had so much attention to detail, flavor, and was generously portioned. The staff is attentive, informative, and hard working. We’ll definitely be coming back!

  • The food was beyond words!! EVERYTHING was awesome!! The pad thai was my personal favorite, full of flavor! If you’re not a fan of spice, make sure to ask for them to dilute the spice a bit (it helps!!). The buttermilk fried chicken was excellent. The mochi samples were great, my favorite being the chocolate, but all of them were surprisingly really good!! AMAZING service. Our server, Derek, was so polite and friendly and made the experience even more enjoyable. The dishes have fun food flavors that play with your taste buds! Overall, this is a very unique and underrated restaurant that I would recommend to any vacationers or locals!!

  • I’ve always wanted to go to XO due to their excellent Instagram posts. Since we had a visitor here from the mainland, it was the perfect opportunity to check it out. We were able to get street parking relatively easy on an early Thursday evening. I imagine it would be difficult on a weekend. We were promptly welcomed and seated seated by Derek. Turns out that not only was Derek the host for the evening, he was also our server bartender, sous chef, dessert maker and busboy. He was excellent in every role he played, taking the time necessary to explain everything about the restaurant, their philosophies, and their food offering. All of his efforts were greatly appreciated and added greatly to the evening. The food was not cheap, but it was all very good. Do expect to pay roughly $100 per person if you are also drinking alcohol. All in all, my family would definitely visit XO again, and I think you should too.

  • The food was great, with a couple standout dishes in the hamachi crudo, vegetable plate, and brown butter bunny butter mochi. They offered some of the most unique flavor combinations that I've had in a while, which is saying a lot because I've had my fair share of Asian fusion food and prix fixe menus - an especially at a pretty unbeatable price. My husband and I got the supplemental lamb, but the portions were large enough that we both would have been full without it. Service was also amazing! Our waiter was so kind and thoughtful, and the different courses came out quickly once the previous course was finished. They did a great job explaining what each course was as well as how best to enjoy them. In combination with the intimate ambiance and cozy restaurant setting, it made for a very enjoyable meal experience. Including a photo of the brown butter bunny butter mochi because it was SO cute.
